A Prairie Home Companion, the variety radio show featuring Garrison Keillor and the Prairie Home Companion cast, was turned into a movie in 2006. The film was a fictional representation of the behind the scenes activities that occur on the long-running radio program. The plot revolves around the new owners that come to A Prairie Home Companion and threaten to cancel the show. An angel who calls herself Asphodel comes to comfort the ensemble cast and to escort one of the Prairie Home Companion cast members into the afterlife.

The film opened at the Fitzgerald Theater, where the radio program A Prairie Home Companion and the movie were taped. The star-studded cast arrived in horse drawn carriages and local media blitzed the night, giving Minnesota and the Twin Cities 15 minutes of fame. Review were mixed by Roger Ebert, the renowned film critic gave it 4 out of 4 stars and Rotten Tomatoes an online movie review site gave it an 80% rating.
